Some bunnies reach a peak in the bonding process where they seem to no longer progress but appear stuck. Often, during this stage, one bunny exhibits these frequent behaviors: bum nipping, demanding but not reciprocating affection, sudden and unexpected bursts of hostility, and lack of touch interactions. In my research of this phenomenon, I discovered a connection between owner frustration and stymied bonding. It's hard for humans to understand bunny-to-bunny communication let alone patiently wait for progress to present. Rabbits often sort out differences at night or early morning hours when humans are unaware of their deeply focused conversations. What seems to be lack of forward movement is continued negotiations bunny-to-bunny. They don't always make dramatic leaps forward. Often, the bonding dynamics seems to stalemate just before it turns the corner. Discouragement is perceived by bunnies as negative vibes. They are sentient beings that react strongly to the feelings of loving caregivers. Their perception of your frustration will frustrate them and could explain sudden bouts of hostility which enervate instead of invigorate bonding. Try to muster all the patience you can and remain calm.

AuthorAn avid animal lover, I became invested in improving their lives. Bonding mixed species together as well as same species is a mission so house animals can live happily together. I have successfully bonded many bunnies that had been red flagged as unbondable, bullies, or fiercely independent. Archives
